Frequently Asked Questions

Clean air is just as important inside the home as it is outdoors. The filters used with a heating and cooling system make a big difference in the quality of air circulating throughout the house. Choosing the right filter and changing it regularly will help your family breathe more easily.

Q. How often do I need to change my furnace filter?

A. Recommendations vary based on a number of factors: the type of filter that you use, how many pets you have, whether anyone in your home has allergies, etc. If you use disposable fiberglass panel or electrostatic panel filters, you should change them anywhere from once a month to once every three months. Pleated filters generally last 3 months.

Filters are relatively inexpensive and easy to change, so there is little reason to wait. If you don't change or clean your filter often enough the filter can get clogged with dust and other airborne particles, forcing your furnace to work harder to maintain airflow. This will reduce your furnace's efficiency and can cause damage.

Q. How can a filter help allergies and asthma?

A. An efficient filter will remove over 90 percent of harmful airborne particles. The installation of air filters is a quick and inexpensive way to improve the quality of the air you breathe. By removing harmful allergens and particles from the air, the filters will help eliminate the painful and irritating symptoms of asthma and allergies. You will benefit in the short term by breathing more easily. In the long term, you will benefit from no longer being bombarded with allergens and irritants.

Q. Should I have the blower (fan) on all the time?

A. Yes, in order to provide around-the-clock protection, we recommend running the furnace blower at all times. The fan motor is small and does not consume a lot of energy. If you want to clean your air and control your dust, you should be continually filtering the air in your home and/or business.

Q. How do I know what kind of filter I should buy?

A. If you have good general health and do not have poor indoor air quality, MERV 7 and 8 rated air conditioner filters will do the job. If you suffer from allergies or other respiratory illnesses, it would improve indoor air quality substantially to upgrade to a MERV 11 or 12 furnace filter. Keeping in mind that the higher the MERV rating, the smaller the particles that are filtered out of the air.

Q. How do I find my filter size?

A. The easiest way to figure out your filter size is to go to your furnace and locate your old filter, before you pull out your old filter turn your thermostat to the off position to ensure that your fan isn't running. Pull out your old filter, most filters will have the size printed on it. If your filter does not have the size printed on it measure both sides to get the width x length.

Q. Should I Put More Than One Air Filter in My HVAC System?

A. You should not use more than one filter in any one place in the HVAC system due the air flow restriction it imposes on the HVAC system. Consult your service manual regarding specifications for your particular furnace or air conditioning system.

Q. What is the purpose of a furnace filter?

A. Furnace manufacturers put inexpensive fiberglass filters into their furnaces to remove airborne particles that might damage the fan and the heating coil. Particle buildup can also decrease the efficiency of your furnace, as the furnace has to work harder to pull air through the intake. More expensive filters can also improve the air quality in your house by removing pollen, bacteria and mold spores from the air. This is especially important if you or someone in your family suffers from allergies.

Q. What does MERV stand for?

A. MERV stands for the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and is a measure of a filter's worst-case efficiency performance. The higher the MERV rating, the more efficient the filter. MERV is an industry standard rating, so it can be used to compare filters made by different companies.

Q. What exactly does a furnace filter do?

A. Home air filters also commonly called "furnace filters" keep the coils and heat exchanges on the heating and air conditioning system clean. Dirty coils and heat exchanges make the system work harder, so keeping the filter clean helps prolong the life of your HVAC unit.

Of course, the filters also clean the air that you and your family breathe. The variety and amount of particles in your home's air will depend on how many people and pets live in the house and what types of activities go on there. People with allergies or asthma should be extra diligent about keeping home air filters clean.

The most important thing to remember about home air filters is to change them regularly. Even the highest-quality filter can't do its job right if it's clogged with a thick layer of particles it's been filtering from the air. Different filters are meant to be changed at different intervals, but once a month is a common time frame. Brand new homes, as well as homes where there is remodeling or construction going on, will need more frequent filter changes to compensate for the extra dust and residue in the air.

Q. What are the types of furnace filters?

A. Disposable fiberglass filters are the least expensive and also the least effective, designed to block only large dust and dirt particles to protect your furnace. Smaller particles, like pollen and mold, pass right through.

Washable electrostatic filters have a static charge that attracts dust, dirt and other matter. These filters are slightly more effective than disposable, but still block only 15 to 20 percent of airborne particles.

Pleated filters use a much denser mesh material to trap particles. The pleats increase the surface area, eliminating large allergens like pollen and mold most are 35 to 50 percent efficient.

Electronic air cleaners use electrodes to create an ionized electrical field that magnetizes pollutant particles and collects them on the filter material. An electronic unit can eliminate virtually all pollen and mold spores, up to 94 percent of smaller particles, and even up to 80 percent of airborne viruses.

Indoor Air Quality Facts

Why worry about indoor air quality?

Air Leaks in the home, Click to Enlarge!

  • Levels of Air Pollution inside the home can be 2 to 5 times higher (and occasionally 100 times higher) than outdoor levels.

  • The EPA ranks poor indoor air quality among the top 5 environmental risks to public health.
  • Dust is made up of pollen, plant and mold spores, pet dander, lint, bacteria and other contaminants.

  • Regular daily activities within the home such as dusting, vacuuming and cooking can increase particulate concentrations.

  • One way to help lower the amount of particles in your home and business is to use better furnace filters and change them regularly.

  • Health effects from breathing many particles can range from irritation of the eyes and/or respiratory tissues to more serious effects, such as decreased lung function and cancer.

  • Disposable furnace filters need to be replaced on a regular basis to insure proper airflow.

  • Inadequate ventilation can increase indoor pollutant levels by not bringing in enough outdoor air to dilute emissions from indoor sources and by not carrying indoor air pollutants out of the home.

  • High temperature and humidity levels can increase indoor air pollutants.

  • Indoor air pollution is one risk that you can do something about.

  • Air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities.

  • The average person spends 90 percent of their time indoors at both work and home, think about how many breaths you take in a day.

  • According to the American Lung Association elements within our home and workplaces have been increasingly recognized as threats to our respiratory health.

  • The most common pollutants are radon, combustion products, biologicals (molds, pet dander, pollen), volatile organic compounds, lead dust and asbestos.

  • The Environmental Protection Agency lists poor indoor air quality as the fourth largest environmental threat to our country.

  • There are an estimated 42.6 million Americans living with hay fever and/or asthma. Learning how to control a home’s environment to reduce allergen levels is important for managing allergies and asthma.

  • Individuals who suffer from asthma, or have other respiratory illness may potentially be at a greater risk for health complications associated with poor air quality in their homes.

  • Asthma is a serious chronic respiratory disease that affects people of all ages.

  • The number of people with asthma has risen during the past two decades.

  • In the house and work place, poor indoor air quality can result in structural rot within the walls and attic and around window framing from excess moisture.

  • Common pollutants can enter our houses through air leaks in the structure.

  • Replace your furnace filter at the stated intervals instructed by the manufacturer, usually about every three months, i.e., the first day of every season.

  • Filters should be replaced more often if you are introducing higher levels of particulates into your home, such as when renovations are being done. Also, consider more frequent replacements if you have a family member with asthma, allergies or another lung disease.
